Hello Everyone.....I'm due to visit my sister in LA soon and am wondering what to do about travel insurance. Do I have to tell them that I have Psoriatic Arthritis? I'm not expecting to have to need any medical help whilst there but it's just in case of an accident - in which case, my medical needs would be the same as someone who doesn't have arthritis. The only thing I would need to let the doctors know out there is what drugs I'm taking. Just wondering what you all do? Many thanks ......Allison

hi alison,yes you need to declare all conditions/medications on form or it will be null and void if anything happens to you,(hopefully not),i always declare all ailments and i have not been loaded,i have used staysure who i found really good a very big choice list to tick and price reasonable and last time i went with saga my daughter went with me,she is 27 i had no problem including her on the policy,it was a good price but you need to check them out,but do declare for your own sake also any aids you need to take ie= walking stick etc,good luck,dorothy

Hi Allison

As Dorothy has said, yes definitely take out medical insurance. I went to LA years ago - have fond memories of it.

You do need to declare all medical conditions, otherwise even if you have an accident, and they say that the condition could be a contributing factor you will not be covered. It is not just treatment abroad you need cover for - but if you need repatriating (ie nurse travelling with you back home - due to accident) - this can cost £20,000 plus!! So definitely get some cover.

Some of the banks do insurance with your main current account - you have to phone them to have your conditions screened and they then charge you an extra premium. Make sure your policy is worldwide and not just Europe - and it lasts for enough days away - some only do 21 days.

Some conditions are surprisingly cheap - I only had to pay £10 for RA, but £40 for underactive thyroid!! My lung condition is much higher!!! Apparently it depends on what people claim for. With the special assistance I get on the plane, I was with a lady being repatriated from Lanzarotte at Christmas - she'd had to have a new hip!!! All she did was fall on an uneven step. She had a private nurse travelling with her and said her treatment had been excellent - and was so glad she'd got insurance cover!

Might be worth phoning round. Try Saga - I had quite a good quote from them. You can get a price just for the time you are away - or an annual policy if you travel a lot. Compare the prices.

Hi,

I always declare everything - that way is the safest, I think. I`ve never paid over the odds for travel insurance. We usually use Saga - their annual policy is quite good value.

I'm under 50 (just) and got some very good insurance from a company courtesy of Moneysavingexpert.com. I used InsuranceWith who covered me for Rheumatoid Arthritis and Meniere's Disease for about £40 which isn't great but the 'included' options covered me for boat trips, surfing, paragliding etc lol. On a serious note, many people take holiday insurance and then don't realise they're *not* covered for these activities!

The information provided by the insurers they brokered for me was very good - simple and easy to understand. They even provide a letter/leaflet to hand to whatever medical professional you need to deal with in the case of an emergency, something I've never come across before. This takes a lot of pressure off you and your loved ones should something happen. They even had a team of interpreters to speak to the medical professionals. Well worth the additional premium I paid.

Hi Saga will only insure those over 50.

I use Columbus Direct - have used them for years since before I was diagnosed with RA in 2007; as I also have hypertension. I think you can go to their website and do it. They have a link that takes you to the medical screening page.
